C&D Recycling Requirements

City of Seattle construction and demolition (C&D) waste recycling requirements are as follows:

  • Collection containers for recyclable C&D waste must be clearly labeled as recycling containers and prominently list the acceptable and unacceptable materials for that container. The list of acceptable materials must be the same as the materials recycled at the receiving material recovery facility or recycling processor. Any unlabeled container will be considered a waste container.
  • The collection containers for recyclable C&D waste must contain no more than 10% non-recyclable material, by volume. This means job-sites should also have a container for collecting garbage.

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) will periodically inspect waste containers to enforce these requirements. Failure to comply with the provisions described above could eventually result in penalties or fines to the contractor and recycling hauler. Contact Liz Kain at SPU at (206) 684-4166 with questions.

Effective March 30, 2009, Waste Management will be the exclusive hauler of C&D waste for disposal in the City of Seattle. If you need C&D waste collection and disposal service, please contact Waste Management at 1-800-592-9995. Read the Seattle Public Utilities memo on the changes.

You can continue to work with any Seattle collector for C&D recycling collection.
