Transportation Choices

Motor vehicle emissions are the single largest contributor to climate change in Seattle. Three sources of these emissions are employee commute trips, business travel and goods delivery.

Employee Commute Trips

Commute trips are a large contributor to global warming. Assistance is available through King County's Commute Trip Reduction program for employers to provide commuting alternatives to their employees. These include transit, and van or car pooling. Here are three ways your company can cut down on commute trips.

    • Car-sharing programs or company vehicles minimize personal car needs
    • Telecommuting and flexible schedules
    • Onsite amenities such as bike storage and showers encourage employees to use alternative means of commuting

Business Travel

Employers can reduce emissions from business travel by utilizing electronic meeting technology, consolidating trips, and encouraging the use of alternative transportation or carpooling wherever practical.  Airline travel can be carbon-intensive – especially for short trips.

Goods & Service Delivery

The movement of goods and services can have a dramatic impact on GHG emissions.  Company-owned fleet vehicles and outsourced freight and transportation services are also responsible for GHG emissions.

For fleet vehicles:

  • Invest in the smallest, most fuel-efficient vehicle that meets your needs
  • Implement an awareness program to reduce idling
  • Maximize the delivery and transportation route efficiency
  • Invest in alternative fueled vehicles such as hybrid electric and/or alternative fuels such as biodiesel

Choose contracted transportation services that have partnered with the EPA to increase fuel efficiency and decrease GHG emissions. Several Washington-based firms are participating in this effort.
